Try something new for dinner tonight

Normally I wouldn’t write about a restaurant just like this, but after this past Saturday’s dining experience, I simply must. The restaurant in question is called “A La Plancha” and located in Garland, TX. The cuisine is Central American and i have to say it was some of the best food I’ve had in a long time. Owner, Daname Lucas (also a Nicaraguan native), is also the chef and is assisted by her family who help cook and wait tables. The atmosphere is typical of what you would expect from a so-called “Hole in the Wall” type of place, but this isn’t just any ordinary hole in the wall. Upon walking in, you’re immediately greeted with enthusiastic smiles and light Latin music in the background. The wait staff is patient and you’ll quickly find yourself engaged in pleasant conversation while you dine on chips and a mouthwatering black bean dip and your drink of choice. (Although A La Plancha currently has no liquor license, this does not take away from the experience). The chips were accompanied by a delicious salsa that is not for the faint of heart. Everything here is home made and it shows. It’s like they say: you can really taste the love in home cooked food and A La Plancha serves to tell the tale.

For our main course we ordered The Carne Asada as well as a Nicaraguan dish called “Boho” (Pork, Yucca, fried plantain, black beans and a chicken tamale). The tamale was, unlike regular tamales, wrapped in a banana leaf and literally melted in your mouth. I can’t even begin to tell you how amazing the Carne Asada was, combined with imported cheeses and fresh cut guacamole.

This isn’t your regular Tex-Mex and although it may have the appearance of a small local neighborhood “Mexican” diner it’s definitely a place worth going to over and over again. Things didn’t seem to pickup until about 8:30 to 9:00, but after studying the lunch menu I can only imagine what this place must be like during lunch on weekdays. Anyone out in Garland, or on the road passing through Garland, pay Daname and her family a visit and savor some excellent Nicaraguan and Honduran cuisine.
